Gustave Dore Illustrations of Poe's The Raven

Dore's Illustrations of Edgar Allan Poe's the Raven

The poet sits in a chair next to the grave of his beloved. One can see the outline of her body, and she appears to be only sleeping, but she is dead. It is not clear if the body is really at the feet of the poet or if he is simply imagining her there. The poet appears to be in a family vault or mausoleum, as there are other crypts nearby.
