Scenes from the Crusades - Illustrations by Gustave Dore
Crusaders discover what they believe to be the True Cross upon which Christ was crucified. During the Middle Ages it was not uncommon for people to peddle pieces of wood and nails which they claimed were from the True Cross. This led one skeptic to remark that if all of these supposed holy relics were put together they would amount to hundreds of crosses.
