Dandalo preaches the crusades, stirring up fervor for a military expedition. Enrico Dandolo (also anglicised Henry Dandolo or in Latin Henricus Dandulus, 1107? – June 21, 1205) was the Doge of the city-state of Venice from 1192 until his death. He is remembered primarily for his role in the Fourth Crusade which he, at age ninety, ultimately sacked Constantinople and ended (for a time) the Byzantine Empire.
In this illustration by Gustave Dore angels can be seen hovering above Dandalo, an indication that God approves of his plan.
