The Crusades provided Gustave Dore with inspiration to draw many scenes of combat and valour. Like his illustrations for Orlando Furioso, these illustrations depict the dramatic conflict between Crusaders and Muslims. But unlike the fantastical scenes in Orlando, these depictions are meant to be more realistic and are based on real events in the conflict.
